Speaking

Ruth brings decades of experience as an educator, group therapist, facilitator, and consultant, and sees her role as supporting the creation of a culture of liberation, creativity, and inquiry in ways that disrupt the hegemony of dominant culture/s.

Expertise

Ruth uses methods that support inventive and unique conversations and collective decision-making. She also helps people through their discomfort by connecting to their dignity and humanity, and using the knowledge and feelings in the room to help to activate pathways to action. Ruth is both a trained therapist and network builder with experience in activism, she is skilled at communication, facilitating connections and generating collective energy and skills that enable respectful collaboration and navigation though conflict. She is committed to building deep and wide connections across disciplines and silos in ways that support transparency and accountability. Her work as a public speaker and podcaster aims to make complex cultural dynamics understandable and relevant to diverse communities, and she has a commitment to health literacy and partnership. Ruth is deeply embedded in contemporary leadership practices and is an experienced coach and mentor, both one-to-one mentor for emerging leaders and current CEOs, and as part of the inaugural Women in Digital Health Leadership program from the Australian Institute for Digital Health.

Testimonials

I was so impressed by Ruth’s ability to lead a rigorous and informative session and to also create a warm and welcoming space that people felt able to engage with. That she was able to do this in an online session was even more impressive and also really needed while we were all in lockdown. I also really appreciated the way she included Writing NSW materials in the presentation.
Julia Tsalis, Program Director at Writing NSW

I had the pleasure of participating in a panel Ruth facilitated on sex, gender and mental health as a speaker on LGBTIQ issues. Ruth’s expert, warm and insightful facilitation created the container for us to go deeper into chewy and nuanced issues where we could be both robust and brave as leaders in our respective fields, and vulnerable as people.
Jackson Fairchild, Senior Policy & Strategy Advisor, Rainbow Health Victoria, ARCSHS

Ruth is a natural facilitator and conversation-maker who uses her warmth, wit and empathy to create spaces where people feel safe to learn, develop and explore sensitive and difficult topics in a nuanced and respectful way. Ruth guided our attendees through challenging topics with energy and humility, maintaining a positive learning environment. Thank you so much Ruth for your knowledge and expertise in cultural safety and facilitation, and for ensuring that we all had the best opportunity to learn and grow our practice.
Carolyn Mogharbel, Team Leader, 1800 My Options

Thank you so much for your help in making yesterday’s launch a successful event. I was congratulated by many people afterwards. This wouldn’t have been possible without your contributions
Joyce Jiang, Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health, Melbourne

Our MC host, Dr. Ruth DeSouza, carried out a fantastic job in making this launch event engaging and fun and successfully highlighted the importance of multilingual partnerships across such a diverse community, that can quite often face communication challenges.
Family Planning Victoria, Melbourne

Thank you for your FABULOUS moderation of our webinar on reproductive justice! You really held the space for our speakers and organising team, going above and beyond to help us think through the structure and content before, during and after the session. On the day itself, you guided the speakers and participants through the content with such care, wit and humour, demonstrating through your facilitation style how to achieve reproductive justice and push for transformative political actions. It is an incredible privilege to be able to work with you!
Rosi Aryal Lees, Acting Research, Advocacy and Policy Manager, Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health (MCWH).

I have been fortunate to work broadly with Dr Ruth DeSouza in my role as CEO at Diversity Arts Australia (DARTS). With a notable background in the fields of nursing, academia and research, Ruth has been a valued member of DARTS’ equity and inclusion-driven Fair Play program steering committee and as one of our key trainers/educators in cultural safety. As one of Australia’s leading thinkers, writers and educators on this topic, Ruth has consistently generated positive feedback from our session participants. She teaches from the heart, ensuring every workshop is specially tailored to its attendees. I strongly recommend Ruth as a trainer, collaborator, and consultant.
Lena Nahlous, CEO & Executive Producer, Diversity Arts Australia [DARTS]
